The Ladies Take on the Why-Not-Tri
We first heard about the Why-Not-Tri the same year we lost Woodsen’s Mom and the kids’ beloved “Omi” to ALS. We don’t usually make many summer commitments, but Atlee had been interested in participating in a triathlon, and we knew we’d be in town since the triathlon was the day before Omi’s Celebration of Life. The real kicker that motivated us to participate was realizing that the triathlon was a fundraiser for ALS, the very disease we had tragically lost Omi to.
Atlee participated that first year with our family, Poppi (Grandpa), and Great Aunt Mona cheering her on. The next year, Melozi and I joined her. This year, my sister and her two daughters rounded out the group. The triathlon is such a hit that we’ve started prioritizing being in town for the race, but this year, we barely made it back in time from our Aleutian trip, arriving the day before the race.
Despite being a bit tired from our ten-day adventure, the kids and I rallied and had a great time. This is a great low-stress race, and I highly recommend it to anyone starting out with triathlons. With the transition spots all the same and open during the race, and the finish line nearby, logistics are easy.

The adult triathlon is a sprint triathlon with a 400m swim, 8-mile bike, and 5k run. The kids’ version includes swimming 2 laps, a 3-mile bike, and a 1-mile run.

Heres a video recap of our race day.
