The Port Alsworth Sourdough Fly-In – part 2
After a fun Friday in Port Alsworth (you can read about it here) we settled in and camped by the plane.
Saturday morning greeted us with sun, which made Eska’s 6:30 am wake almost enjoyable.

One of my favorite things to do while camping is cooking and eating good food. For Saturday morning I had precooked some hashbrowns and went to work browning sausage and cooking eggs for breakfast burritos. We love coordinating meals with friends and had planned on making enough to share breakfast with the Beat family who was camping beside us.
We haven’t let our kids do a lot of spend the nights, but I don’t feel too bad because camping with friends hits the highlights…Kids stay up late, eat meals together, snack constantly, play together and wander between tents.
After an early breakfast we were ready for the yearly 5k at 9 am. The 5k takes you off the runway, on to the beach, along a few trails, and provides a fun way to see more of the surrounding area. This year Atlee, Melozi, Woodsen and I all ran the 5k. Woodsen’s tradition is to run it in Chaco sandels.

After the 5k we enjoyed delicious cinnamon rolls provided by the community, and I splurged on a coffee from Backcountry Espresso. Kids enjoyed hanging out and we waited for the flying competition to start at 12.
Woodsen drained fuel from the airplane and stored it in fuel bags to lighten up the plane for the competition. The competition is a short take of competition based on class, and a spot landing competition that included all airplanes. His second landing seemed impressive to me, but the judges called it a scratch, since landing before the line is an automatic disqualification.
Next up kid games.

Games were followed with a community potluck, apparently the only photo I took was Melozi munching on lettuce.

This year Atlee and a couple of her friends participated in the yearly scavenger hunt. After dinner Woodsen put the younger two kids to bed and Atlee, Melozi and I walked the runway trying to find a few more things to check off for her scavenger hunt
Most places have roads you walk up and down and between, but in Port Alsworth, at least during the fly in, it seems we walk up, down an between runways (theres two big runways that parallel each other)

Most planes either come for just Saturday or leave Sunday, bur we enjoy lingering a little longer and heading out Monday. Sunday we enjoyed pancakes provided by Lake & Pen air, attended church, then greeted the guests for Operation Heal our Patriots program hosted by Samaritans purse.
The community comes out to wave flags and welcome the couples as they arrive by plane.
There were lots of kid shenanigans around the airplane before we headed back to the beach to enjoy Korean moose bowls.

Monday we enjoyed a leisurely morning, walked to the food truck for Milkshakes with friends then packed up and headed for home. Monday was again amazing weather.

See you again next year Port Alsworth!
