Early Summer Day trip to Lake George
June 8th 2025
We love sharing airplane adventures with friends and it’s extra special when schedules, logistics and weather work out to fly our extended family out to share the experience with them.
My sister and her family moved from Nome, Alaska to Palmer, Alaska last year and I can’t tell you how special it has been to have her family nearby. I had wanted to get them out in our airplane to share an adventure with them, and Lake George was the obvious destination. It’s close to home, and really the perfect day trip for families. We land at the mud strip, hike to the lake, eat, hike back and kids always seem to find endless entertainment between the water and rocks at the lake, and flowers, grasshoppers on the dry flat mud strip.

By the time Woodsen had finished the two trips to get everyone to the mud strip everyone was hungry. Hotdogs are our summer staple, so my brother in law Nick started a fire and soon hot dogs and s’mores were being roasted and devoured.

With weather in town rainy, the scattered clouds and glimpses of sun were a welcome site. The typical off glacier afternoon wind made its appearance, but didnt damper the fun too much.

Nothing screams summer more than hotdogs and s’mores!

Once all the hungry children were fed, we left the mud strip and headed for the hill separating us from the lake.
Hiking from the mud strip to the lake is the perfect hike for kids, maybe a half mile, with a little uphill, then down to the glacier filled lake.

Now days, keeping kids from running off is the biggest challenge.

Kids explored, found heart rocks, and played with their cousins.

Writing about this reminds me of the simplicity, but also the beauty of adventures that we have. The logistic of getting there is sometimes the biggest obstacle, after that it’s all about enjoying and exploring the beautiful surroundings with the people we love. Add some fuel in the form of hotdogs, sunshine, and you don’t need much else.
Another memorable day out in the nearby wilds of Alaska.
