Exploring Mitkof Island-3

Day three of our trip was overcast and rainy. After breakfast and coffee we dropped woodsen off at the plane to refuel and look at the door handle that broke the day before. Thanks to the wingtip fuel tanks we had flown from Wasilla to Petersburg on one tank of gas, roughly 6 hours and 45 min of flying.

From the airport we headed to the beach playground, then to the Viking lookout to see what we could spot.

After lunch Debbie and I snuck away to explore the shops in Petersburg. Since first driving through Petersburg I was struck by the charm of the small fishing town with its strong Nordic history. Window shutters and house fronts painted with rosemåling, flower boxes full of colorful blooms in windows, foxglove grew in yards and here and there along the sidewalks, and Norwegian flags hung from shops.

Later in the day we all headed out the road to Green Camp. My friend Shannon had recommended it as a kid favorite thanks to a seine net hung from the trees for the kids to climb on. Seine net climbing was a big hit for our kids as well.

Meanwhile I enjoyed the beautiful views. We were even able to spot the town of Wrangell in the distance from one of the camp sites.

The next morning Atlee made muffins with Debbie for the flight, we enjoyed a hot breakfast, said goodbye, and packed up the airplane for the long haul flight to Washington.
